As the reader suspects, these two women are Michael's wife and daughter, who after many years return. There they soon learn that Michael Henchard has become Mayor of Casterbridge. The story then skips about 19 years, and continues with the arrival of Elizabeth-Jane and her mother Suzan in Casterbridge. The next morning he flees from the town, swearing to abolish alcohol for twenty-one years to come. In this part of the book the reader learns about Michael Henchard unforgivable action, the selling of his wife and child to a sailor named Newson at a fair in Weydon-Priors. It is beyond human capabilities to produce a complete summary of this story, but it is possible to divide the story in five parts. This book is about a man whose deeds in the past keep hunting him, even when he has reached a very hign status, as mayor and rich merchant in a small town in Wessex.
